gilmour retires
September 08, 2003 - 10:06 pm

ok, so i'm not supposed to be cheering the crummy leafs this year. and eveyrone and their cousin is asking me if i'm going to be a penguins fan this year. please! i know the leafs will suck the big one in 2003-04* but pittsburgh? they'll miss the play-offs*

anyway, i'm not here to fight about who's going to do what. i was flipping the channels and saw that doug "killer" gilmour has hung up his skates. yeah, we all loved him when he palyed for the leafs(or st. louis, calgary, new jersey...) how could you not? back in the day when he was traded to t.o. in '91, no one could have seen what was coming. what an impact he would make on a crappy crappy team. see up until then the leafs were a laughing stock. sorry the leafs were THE laughing stock of the n.h.l. but a couple of years later they were one game away from the stanley cup final. thanks to dougie g. and the rest of them. maybe they were overachievers, maybe they had a certain amount of luck, but they were exciting. and gilmour did it all. so half a dozen teams and years after he split from the leafs, he returned in a trade deadline deal with the habs. his first game back, he injures his knee. hearts sink. i wished it could have been different. then after a quick exit from the playoffs, there was talk of maybe next year. nope. not for gilmour. i'm glad he kind of retired a leaf. i know he wanted it. and alot of leaf greats never get that chance. so he did it. nice. i could go on. and i'm sure with the damn hockey season a month away i'll be cursing until april. i'll try and keep the hockey crap to a minimum.

so with that, i'll leave you with one final gilmour memory. one that will be played over and over again on t.v. and in our minds. 1993. second round of the playoffs. game one against st. louis. (ironically a young curtis joseph is in net) it's double overtime and gilmour scores the most famous goal of his career. a double fake out wrap around to win it. yep. how about those leafs.
