today i started reading a book i bought for my girlfriend some months ago. i had a gut feeling i would eventually read it. it also had to be the right time. today, it was time. the book is entitled, this cold heaven: seven seasons in greenland by gretel ehrlich. i bought it for court cuz she wanted to know more about greenland. let me tell you, there aren't too many books out on "greenland". this is the closest i could find. and it sounded damn interesting. plus the temp today is about 36C or 96F(with the humidex it's more like 42C and whatever the hell above 100F you want) so reading about ice and snow and darkness had it's appeal. not that i 'd want to be thrust into -20F temps. we just got out of the crappiest recorded winter & spring i can remember. work has been super slow this week and just sitting in my office with nothing to do was driving me crazy. court had dropped off the book about a month-and-a-half ago for me to read after she finished it. she eats books for breakfast and i wish i could do the same. i prefer a much slower pace. i read 2-3 books a year. one day i'll bump that up a bit. i think there's a library near my new place, so i'll go exploring one day and find it. so if you haven't already guessed the book is about the author's adventures in greenland in various seasons throughout the years. from '93 to '98, i think. interspersed are stories and exerpts of the famous danish-greenlandic explorer knud rasmussen, who is fondly remembered to this day. he once drove a dogsled from greenland to siberia. quite amazing. i am totally engrossed already. it is fascinating. i probably would have devoured it tonight, but i left it at work to help me cope with those boring times at work. and to escape. yesterday, i was rambling about brown outs going on in my part of the world. today, i'd like to tell you that is was all a lie. ok, how bout, lack of information. seems like it wasn't a gross power surge(i'm sure it'll happen sooner or later) but a fire at a burlington hydro sub-station. yep, simple as that. so hamtown, the fair city of burlington and neighbouring oakville had no power for a while. and that sucks when that means no a/c on the hottest day in june. you'll be relieved to know that i won't be pursuing that crack reporting career i had hopes on. next time i'll get my facts straight. uh! well, time to drink water and eat popsicles. stay cool!
